Movie Review: Rare Exports

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale

Synopsis: On Christmas Eve in Finland, Santa Claus is unearthed in an archaeological dig. Soon after, children start disappearing, leading a boy and his father to capture Santa and, with the help of fellow hunters, they look to sell him back to the corporation that sponsored the dig. And then there's Santa's elves, who are determined to free their leader.

Wow, talk about a holiday film with a dark and dry sense of humor and an original twist on the traditional Christmas tale... this is it. This is a whole lot of fun. The pace and storyline are very good, but some of the characters are a bit weak in substance. That doesn't take much away from the enjoyment though really. The humor is just so dark and things even are a bit creepy at times I thought.

For being billed more as a horror film, there's not a whole lot of gore really but there is some nudity... creepy old Santa men nudity that is, so don't get too excited. In fact, I don't believe there is 1 single woman in this whole film now that I think of it.

As dark holiday fable movies go, I could see this becoming a cult classic just on it's originality and quirkiness alone, although the execution ain't bad either. The ending was perhaps a bit unsatisfying but overall memorable nonetheless. A solid little antidote to the usual Christmas feelgood.

7.5/10
