avril lavigne Canadian singer-songwriter

Avril Ramona Lavigne pronunciation: /ˈævrɨl ləˈviːn/; av-ril lə-veen; born 27 September 1984 is a Canadian singer-songwriter, fashion designer, actress, and philanthropist. She was born in Belleville, Ontario, but spent the majority of her youth in the small town of Napanee. By the age of 15, she had appeared on stage with Shania Twain; by 16, she had signed a two-album recording contract with Arista (now RCA Records) worth more than $2 million. In 2002, when she was 17 years old, Lavigne broke onto the music scene with her debut album Let Go.

Let Go made Lavigne the youngest female soloist to reach No. 1 in the UK, and the album was certified four-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. By 2009, over 16 million copies had been sold worldwide. Her breakthrough single, "Complicated", peaked at No. 1 in many countries around the world, as did the album Let Go. Her second album, Under My Skin, was released in 2004 and was her first album to peak at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200, eventually selling more than 10 million copies worldwide. The Best Damn Thing, Lavigne’s third album, was released in 2007, becoming her third No. 1 album in the UK Albums Chart and featuring her first U.S. Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single, "Girlfriend". Lavigne has scored a total of five No. 1 singles worldwide, including "Complicated", "Sk8er Boi", "I'm with You", "My Happy Ending" and "Girlfriend". With more than 30 million copies of her albums sold worldwide, Lavigne is currently one of the top-selling artists releasing albums in the U.S., with over 10.25 million copies certified by the RIAA. Her fourth studio album, Goodbye Lullaby, was released in March 2011. Goodbye Lullaby gave Lavigne her fourth top 10 album on the U.S. Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart and her third No. 1 album in both Japan and Australia. Three months after the release of Goodbye Lullaby, Lavigne began work on her fifth album.

Lavigne branched out from recording music, pursuing careers in feature film acting and designing clothes and perfumes. She voiced a character in the animated film, Over the Hedge, in 2006. That same year, she made her on-screen feature film debut in Fast Food Nation. In 2008, Lavigne introduced her clothing line, Abbey Dawn, and in 2009, she released her first perfume, Black Star, which was followed by her second perfume, Forbidden Rose, in 2010. In July 2006, Lavigne married her boyfriend of two years, Deryck Whibley, lead singer and guitarist for Sum 41. The marriage lasted a little over three years, and in October 2009, Lavigne filed for divorce. Whibley and Lavigne continued to work together, with Whibley producing her fourth album, as well as Lavigne's single, "Alice", written for Tim Burton's film Alice in Wonderland.

Steven Spielberg/Stephen King Under the Dome Collaboration Heading to Showtime

Steven Spielberg/Stephen King Under the Dome Collaboration Heading to Showtime:

We've known for a while that Steven Spielberg and Stephen King were joining forces to develop a TV series based on King's supernatural thriller Under the Dome, and now that the project has found a home at Showtime, things should be heating up shortly.

Deadline reports that, in one of Showtime’s "most ambitious" undertakings, the pay cable network is partnering with Spielberg and King for "Under the Dome", a drama series based on King’s 2009 novel, which will be produced by DreamWorks Television. The supernatural thriller revolves around locals at a Maine vacation spot who battle one another when a force field suddenly surrounds their town and cuts them off from the rest of the world.

DreamWorks’ Spielberg and Stacey Snider nabbed the rights to King’s novel shortly after it was published in November 2009 to strong reviews, and although it was previously reported that "The River" scribe Michael Green was working on a script, a new search is under way for a writer for the project, whose executive producers will include King and DreamWorks TV’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank. Spielberg has a longstanding relationship with King, previously teaming with the bestselling author to adapt his 1984 novel The Talisman, which was originally developed as a feature and then as a miniseries that was once set up at TNT.

Book Synopsis:

Just down Route 119 in Chester’s Mill, Maine, all hell is about to break loose...

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day, a small town is suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and rain down flaming wreckage. A gardener’s hand is severed as the dome descends. Cars explode on impact. Families are separated, and panic mounts. No one can fathom what the barrier is, where it came from, and when — or if — it will go away. Now a few intrepid citizens, led by an Iraq vet turned short-order cook, face down a ruthless politician dead set on seizing the reins of power under the dome. But their main adversary is the dome itself. Because time isn’t just running short. It’s running out.

Movie Review: The Ward

Synopsis: A thriller centered on an institutionalized young woman (Amber Heard) who becomes terrorized by a ghost.

A pretty straight-forward, fast-moving slasher film that's got a little tension, some good jump scares and an excellent eerie location... but really lacks enough suspense or shocks to have me praising it as one of director John Carpenter's greats or anything. It's good though, just not great by any means.

One thing it does having going for it is a hot cast of women, with not only the lovely Amber Heard (Zombieland) but also smokin' hot Danielle Panabaker (The Crazies) and Lyndsy Fonseca. They and some others are trapped in a mental hospital and starting to get knocked off. There's the cliches like "I shouldn't be here!" and the old mean nurse hittin' 'em with needles and drugs. That's about it really, except there are a few flashbacks and of course a big twist. It's essentially a combination of a few movies (stop reading now or you might get a spoiler)... part Shutter Island and part Identity.

Nothing new, super-scary or very original, but it's still a fun, watchable slasher flick.

Movie Review: Grave Encounters

Synopsis: The crew of "Grave Encounters", a ghost-hunting reality television show, are shooting an episode inside the abandoned Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital, where unexplained phenomena has been reported for years. All in the name of good television, they voluntarily lock themselves inside the building for the night and begin a paranormal investigation, capturing everything on camera. They quickly realize that the building is more than just haunted - it is alive - and it has no intention of ever letting them leave. Ultimately they discover the truth behind the hospital's dark past... and tape what turns out to be their final episode.

This starts out like an episode of the TV shows Ghost Hunters mixed with Paranormal State, then takes a turn towards the movies Paranormal Activity meets House on Haunted Hill with a dash of Session 9. So yeah, it's mostly been done before for sure... old psychiatric hospital, locked in for the night, hunting ghosts... etc. But there's a bit of originality here still in the delivery and it provides are some good jump scares in the later half after a slow set-up.

One thing I think that sort of turned me off a bit though was instead of keeping thing a bit less revealing and creepy (or one might even say a bit more believable) it becomes a lot more over-the-top and sensational towards the end. It does lead to some good jumps and such but it also sort of makes it a whole different type of film really I thought. I guess it depends on whether you like the subtle and creepy stuff or prefer demons fully manifesting and chasing people down hallways. I like both, but I'd prefer to see one or the other in my movie.

The acting is OK, the direction is solid and the location and atmosphere are fantastic. Overall it's very entertaining.

SEC power rankings From ESPN

SEC power rankings: We have spent months analyzing players, schemes and coaches, but we are finally here.

In just a couple of days, the 2011 college football season will begin (thank you Mississippi State and Kentucky).

To kick off game week, we at the SEC blog have constructed our own power rankings to lead you into the season. This is an outlook on the season after taking into consideration a number of team items, including talent, experience and injuries.

Each week we'll bring you our thoughts on the state of the SEC's teams and things will no doubt change each week. Play well and your stock goes up. Drift under potential and you'll see yourself fall in our rankings.

Without further ado, here are our first batch of SEC power rankings for the 2011 season:

1. Alabama: The Tide enter the season as one of the most complete teams in the nation. Ten starters are back on defense and it’d be hard to find a better secondary and linebacker unit. It’s Trent Richardson’s time at running back and while Alabama’s quarterback options are young and inexperienced, they are both very talented and ready to lead.

2. LSU: This team could have seriously contended with Alabama for the No. 1 spot if not for the suspensions of senior quarterback Jordan Jefferson and wide receiver Russell Shepard for at least the opener. But the Tigers aren’t sunk. Veteran Jarrett Lee takes over at quarterback and he still has plenty of weapons on offense. Defensively, this group might be the most athletic around and has the ability to carry the Tigers this fall.

3. Arkansas: The season-ending injury to Knile Davis might have initially hindered the Razorbacks’ chances at a title run, but there is still a wealth of talent on offense. Tyler Wilson has four more than capable options at receiver and there is depth at running back. Defensively, this is the best group coach Bobby Petrino has had in Fayetteville.

4. South Carolina: Steve Spurrier claims to have the best team he’s ever had in Columbia and the Gamecocks are the most complete team in the East. With their main playmakers back on offense and the defense loaded with talent, the Gamecocks are primed to make it back-to-back trips to the SEC title game.

5. Georgia: Before attrition and injuries delivered some unwanted hits to the offense this offseason, the Bulldogs were being heralded as a team that could seriously compete for the conference title. There is still firepower on offense, starting with quarterback Aaron Murray, and the defense has a plethora of speed all around, but keeping that offensive line healthy is key.

6. Mississippi State: This set of Bulldogs has been a popular dark horse pick in the West. The offense is loaded and has depth for days at the skill positions. Three starting linebackers have to be replaced, but Mississippi’s State’s secondary is as athletic as any defensive backfield and should regularly frustrate opposing quarterbacks this fall.

7. Florida: The Gators usher in a new coaching staff, but still have a ton of questions on offense. As usual, the defense has loads of speed, especially in the front seven, but the loss of Janoris Jenkins raises concerns about the secondary. But for Florida to succeed, quarterback John Brantley will have to rediscover his confidence.

8. Tennessee: There is no doubt that the Volunteers will be able to score a handful of points this fall, but keeping opponents off the scoreboard could be an issue. Coach Derek Dooley considers this year one for him at Tennessee and he and his team are looking for a fresh start in 2011.

9. Auburn: The defending national champion must replace almost all of a team that went undefeated in 2010. Cam Newton is gone, leaving Mike Dyer and Onterio McCalebb to shoulder most of the offense load. There is talent on the Plains, but only six starters return, meaning there will be plenty of growing pains.

10. Ole Miss: The Rebels are looking for anything better than their 4-8 2010 campaign. Ole Miss is young across the board and is breaking in a quarterback in Barry Brunetti, who has nine career pass attempts. Outside of an experienced backfield and offensive line, the Rebels have questions at pretty much every position.

11. Kentucky: Playmakers that made the Wildcats’ offense go last season are gone, which will make new starting quarterback Morgan Newton’s that much more challenging. The defense struggled mightily last season, but new defensive coordinator Rick Minter has brought in his popular multiple schemes. This team needs to find offense playmakers and team toughness.

12. Vanderbilt: There is more excitement and confidence in Nashville, thanks to new coach James Franklin. The Commodores return more than 20 starters, but those starters went 2-10 last season. Franklin has proved he can recruit and fire up an almost lifeless fan base, but now it’s time to coach – and win.

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta March 28, 1986, better known by her stage name Lady Gaga, is an American pop singer-songwriter. After enrolling at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 2003 and later performing in the rock music scene of New York City's Lower East Side, she signed with Streamline Records, an imprint of Interscope Records. During her early time at Interscope, she worked as a songwriter for fellow label artists and captured the attention of recording artist Akon who, recognizing her vocal abilities, signed her to his own label, Kon Live Distribution.

Gaga came to prominence following the release of her debut studio album The Fame (2008), which was a critical and commercial success and achieved international popularity with the singles "Just Dance" and "Poker Face". Early life

Lara Stone was born in the small Dutch town of Mierlo to a Dutch mother and a British father. She was first discovered in the Paris Metro when she was 14 and took part in the Elite Model Look competition in 1999 when she was just 15. Although she did not win, she impressed Elite executives and was signed to Elite Modeling Agency and began to model.

Career

Breakthrough, 2006-2008

Stone left Elite and signed with IMG Models worldwide in 2006. In January, she made her runway debut when Riccardo Tisci put her in his Givenchy couture shows in Paris. Later that year she was an exclusive for Calvin Klein. 2007 proved to be more lucky when she had a big Bardot-like spread in March’s Vogue Paris, and then got the cover for their April issue. "Sometimes a girl just touches you," Carine Roitfeld, the magazine’s editor, said. The New York Times' fashion critic Cathy Horyn named her the "anti-model" in her On the Runway blog; describing her as not your typical runway android with her gap front teeth, stunned expression, and Lurch walk, which can be attributed to her small size 7 feet — runway shoes are at least a size larger. All the buzz over Stone prompted New York Magazine to rank her No. 2 on their "Top Ten Models to Watch" for in New York Fashion Week.

Stone has opened shows for Giles Deacon, Isabel Marant, Christopher Kane, Fendi, and MaxMara, and closed for Diesel, Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney, and Balmain. She has also been a prestigious "semi-exclusive" for Prada, meaning she could not walk any other shows during New York fashion week or any shows in Milan before the Prada show.

Her spring/summer 2008 campaigns included Givenchy, Belstaff, Just Cavalli, and H&M.Casting agent James Scully, who is responsible to pick which model is to score a spot on top runways, says in regards to Stone:

In my entire career I can count on one hand the models whose presence and beauty are so otherworldly that they can silence a room and stop traffic. That intense gaze and luscious body! I'm sure she is not even aware of how powerful and arresting her beauty is, and it's no surprise that Paris Vogue is a love letter to her every month. She can't walk a lick, but that never hurt Stephanie either.
