Movie Review: Rio

Synopsis: When Blu (Jesse Eisenberg), a domesticated macaw from small-town Minnesota, is discovered to be the last male of his kind, he and his owner take off on an adventure to Rio de Janeiro to hook up with the bird of his dreams, the fiercely independent Jewel (Anne Hathaway).

I'll try to make this short and sweet. There are seemingly hundreds of this same type of animated features hitting the theater every year now. How is this one any different? Well, it's not much, but it's still good. It isn't very original, the generic story feels very "been there done that", but it does push itself to the better pile with some gorgeous and colorful visuals and animation, very catchy music and great, funny vocal performances.

Eisenberg is perfect as the lead voice and is quite funny as are several other good characters. The script, while a generic story, is pretty witty and doesn't overdo the pop culture references yet stays fresh.

All-in-all, it lacks a bit in originality but it makes up for it in the presentation. Well worth a watch, and hopefully a sequel.

7.5/10
