Movie Review: The Ward

Synopsis: A thriller centered on an institutionalized young woman (Amber Heard) who becomes terrorized by a ghost.

A pretty straight-forward, fast-moving slasher film that's got a little tension, some good jump scares and an excellent eerie location... but really lacks enough suspense or shocks to have me praising it as one of director John Carpenter's greats or anything. It's good though, just not great by any means.

One thing it does having going for it is a hot cast of women, with not only the lovely Amber Heard (Zombieland) but also smokin' hot Danielle Panabaker (The Crazies) and Lyndsy Fonseca. They and some others are trapped in a mental hospital and starting to get knocked off. There's the cliches like "I shouldn't be here!" and the old mean nurse hittin' 'em with needles and drugs. That's about it really, except there are a few flashbacks and of course a big twist. It's essentially a combination of a few movies (stop reading now or you might get a spoiler)... part Shutter Island and part Identity.

Nothing new, super-scary or very original, but it's still a fun, watchable slasher flick.

6/10
