Movie Review: Fragile

Synopsis: At her new job in a rundown children's hospital, a nurse (Calista Flockhart) desperately tries to keep her patients safe from a plague of random, mysterious attacks.

Frankly I didn't expect much from this movie because from the preview I'd seen it looked like pretty much just another in a long line of "creepy kid, old hospital, ghost is trying to tell you something" movies. In all honesty that's pretty much what it is too, but it's got a pretty nice style to it that actually makes it fun and memorable I think.

The script is good, but again, we've seen this all before, except that it's got a pretty emotional and sensitive side not seen in a lot of these movies. The setting is excellent is an old isolated, creepy hospital. The acting is pretty good really, with Flockhart playing an emotional role very believably. The music and visual effects set a very effective atmosphere and there are some genuine scares here too. There are a few of those "bump in the night" scares but they got me and then there are a few more direct in-your-face kind of thrills that actually get pretty creepy.

It's a bit scary and entertaining enough that I recommend it for fans of a good "boo-dunit" type ghost story like the classic "The Changeling" with a touch of "The Ring" thrown in. You could do much worse.

7/10
