Movie Review: Peep World

Synopsis: On the day of their Father's 70th birthday party, four siblings come to terms with the publication of a best-selling novel written by the youngest sibling, that exposes the dysfunctional family's most intimate dirty little secrets.

Wow, with a cast like this I thought this would be great. Perhaps I set my expectations too high when I saw the cast included Michael C. Hall, Rainn Wilson, Kate Mara, Sarah Silverman and that it's narrated by Lewis Black. It's not great though. It's interesting, there are a few laughs and some good characters drawn, but overall it's just lacking a bit.

It's sort of like a long episode of Arrested Development I guess, minus some of the quirkyness and humor. Nathan has written a book based on his dysfunctional family. His sister Cheri is suing him since she says it's all lies. Brother Joel is struggling to get his life back on track after a third trip to rehab. Brother Jack's responsible demeanor is crumbling as he has to admit his secrets to his wife. Meanwhile, Nathan has to keep his own secrets under-wraps as he tries to act condescendingly towards the hot, young PR rep he hired.

It's all fun and it stays pretty interesting, but it's never just laugh out loud funny. I liked the performances of the great cast. The situations are all pretty believable and they seem like typical problems of a "normal" family to an extent. It's really a lot more about the characters, dialogue and real problems than a bunch of gags. Let's call it a drama-dy.

It's a good melodrama, but just an OK comedy. Depends on what mood you're in I guess. Good story and great cast though.

6/10
