Hooray for Horror!

Not sure how I missed this, maybe because I've been swamped this year so far, but apparently the excellent Little Rock Film Festival group has decided to try a horror festival this year. Opening night they'll be kicking it off with a film I've been pumped for since hearing about, Madison County, from Arkansas native and writer/director Eric England. The film stars Arkansas native Colley Bailey, as well as Nick Principe, Ace Marrero, Natalie Sheetz, Joanna Sotomura, and Matt Mercer. The film was shot in and around Ozark, Arkansas. Other films announced so far include The Holding, Exit Humanity and The Speak. More to come!

The Cabin in the Woods Trailer

At first, this trailer looks like just another "teens in the woods" type movie... but then things get turned on their ass pretty quickly. I've been eager to see this movie since I first heard about it, and it looks like it'll finally hit theaters April 13th, 2012. Check out the awesome trailer below for The Cabin in the Woods, written by Josh Whedon (Serenity, Firefly, Angel) and Drew Goddard (Lost, Alias).

Storyline: A group of friends at a cabin retreat scratch the surface of something so massive and horrific that they can only begin to fathom it as time quickly runs out.

The Amityville Hauting Trailer

Don't ask me, but somehow they're still making movies about the Amityville house, where real murders did occur but all the ghost stories and such were seemingly hoaxed but it remains one of the most popular haunting accounts in American folklore. I guess truth never gets in the way of a good story. Well now production company The Asylum has a new film coming called The Amityville Haunting and here's what their website says:

"Earlier this year we were contacted by the estate of the Benson family who had briefly rented the infamous house on Long Island, New York. The family has since disappeared and the estate is determined to prove that the Bensons did not abscond to avoid paying their debts (as their banks and other creditors have claimed). Watch The Amityville Haunting on December 27, 2011 and decide the truth for yourself."

From this trailer it appears to be sort of a first-person shot/found footage type film. Seems sort of fun. We'll see I guess.

Black Light Book Trailer

This looks pretty cool. It's a trailer for a book that came out on Oct 5th (but somehow I've just now learned of it) by Patrick Melton, Marcus Dunstan and Stephen Romano called "Black Light". Who the hell are they and why do I care?!? Well, Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunston only wrote the screenplays for Saw IV, Saw V, Saw VI, Saw 3D, and The Collector, which Dunstan also directed. Currently, they are filming The Collection, and wrote Piranha 3DD. Stephen Romano is an acclaimed author, screenwriter and illustrator, having written for Showtime's excellent Emmy-winning original series Masters Of Horror. So yeah, that's enough for me. I'll be grabbing this immediately.

The Innkeepers Trailer Is Here

From Writer-director Ti West (director of The House of the Devil) comes a new horror offering, The Innkeepers. Not sure of an exact release date yet, but should be sometime in 2012 I'd guess.

The Innkeepers stars Sara Paxton (Shark Night 3D, The Last House on the Left) as Claire and Pat Healy (The Assassination of Jesse James) as Luke, a pair of co-workers at an aging New England hotel. The Innkeepers has received terrific reviews since its debut at the SXSW Festival and this trailer seems to have a pretty creepy atmosphere and a few jump-scares. Check it out below:

Synopsis: "After over one hundred years of service, The Yankee Pedlar Inn is shutting its doors for good. The last remaining employees -Claire and Luke - are determined to uncover proof of what many believe to be one of New England's most haunted hotels. As the Inn's final days draw near, odd guests check in as the pair of minimum wage "ghost hunters" begin to experience strange and alarming events that may ultimately cause them to be mere footnotes in the hotel's long unexplained history."

Where'd Ya Get Those Peepers?

I revisited another series for Halloween this past week, so I figured I share some thoughts. I remember going to the theater without high expectations for Jeepers Creepers when it came out in 2001, and really had no idea what to expect since I avoid reviews and the like as to not read any spoilers. What I got from the movie was a pleasant surprise... a nice little monster movie that's a lot of fun. Now after a sequel that I also enjoyed there's another film in the series currently being filmed: Jeepers Creepers III: The Creeper Walks Among Us. But let me not get ahead of myself too much. Back to the first film.

I guess what I liked so much about it stemmed from the fact that I had no idea what it was about. From the previews I thought it was a slasher film, but it's not that at all. It starts out as a brother and sister drive home from college to their parents house down a lonely stretch of highway (during the daytime). So stage 1 begins... a road movie. They get harassed by a guy in a huge, menacing truck along the way and eventually see him up to no good at an old church as they pass. Upon investigation of the church, they find a boatload of bodies and run like hell, so stage 2 begins... a chase movie that still feels like a slasher film. At some point while they're at an old ladies house (surround by cats) you realize that what's chasing them isn't a man at all, but a monster. So stage 3 kicks in... a monster movie. A bizarre winged, birdlike monster who like to snack on people. When they first see him in his truck, the vanity tag reads BEATNGU, which they assume means "beating you". After watching him munch on a few folks you realize that it really means "be eating you", although I'm not sure what monster would go through the trouble of getting a personalized tag on his vehicle implicating himself... it's still cool.

Of course it's not all good all the time. I mean it's a bit cliche' at many parts, the characters tend to behave in unrealistic ways at times (they return to the old church to look around... hello?) and I get tired of the sister being such a bitch, but I still enjoy watching it pretty much every Halloween now.

I love the old truck. I love the bad guy (known now as the Creeper). I love when Trish says "You know the part in scary movies when somebody does something really stupid, and everybody hates them for it? This is it." I like the guy who plays the brother, Derry (Justin Long aka the Mac in the Apples's MAC commercials among other roles). I like that the creature isn't overdone with CGI but a guy in costume. It's got good suspense and a nice visual look to it with a big final showdown and ending.

And since it was made for a budget of $10 mil and it grossed over $59 mil worldwide... you should have known there would be a sequel. Sure enough, 2 years later Jeepers Creepers 2 was released. In the first film, we learn the Creeper feeds for 23 days every 23 years, so part 2 is set just a few days after the first movie. This time a school bus driving on the same highway with a high school basketball team and some cheerleaders is attacked.

This time around I obviously knew going in it was a monster movie so the whole surprise is gone, but at least the Creeper begins smashing folks right off the bat this time. At the very beginning he tries to fake someone out as a scarecrow, as he does in the first movie, and you know things are going to get wild quickly this time around. After he snatches some kid, the kid's father (played excellently by Ray Wise) becomes hellbent on revenge ala Captain Ahab in Moby Dick. It adds a storyline to the kids on the school bus story and by the end the 2 stories collide in bloody fun.

What's not to like? Well, there's no Creeper truck in this one, which sort of sucks. Also the song the title of the series is based on doesn't even play until the credits. A couple of missed opportunities to tie it more to the first film if you ask me. Lastly, once again the director feels the need to put annoying kids together and let them bicker back and forth, like that's going to make the audience relate to them? It makes me want to choke them all. But on the plus side, Justin Long does cameo for a small dream type appearance.

At the box office, Jeepers Creepers 2 was made for a budget of $17 mil and took in over $63 mil worldwide, another success. Enough so that the 3rd film is underway, as I said above.

In Jeepers Creepers 3, Jonathan Breck will be back under the makeup as the beast again, and of course Ray Wise will reprise his role from the second film. The writer and director of all 3 movies, Victor Salva, promises that part 3 "brings back all the classic ideas of the first film, but brings them horrifyingly full circle. It also revisits characters from both, lets us learn more about what the Creeper is and, by popular demand, reintroduces the infamous Creeper truck."

The story will have a prologue set in the Old West that details how the Creeper became a terrifying part of Native American folklore and then jumps ahead to the ending of Jeepers Creepers II on the eve of a brand new 23rd spring.

According to Salva "one aspect of the third film features Trish (again played by Gina Philips from the original film), who, 23 years later, has a teenage son of her own, named Darry after her long lost brother. Trish is having a terrible recurring dream where her son meets the same terrible fate as her brother. Now a rich and powerful woman, Trish is determined to stop the Creeper once and for all."

Pencil me in for the first weekend of release, which from what I've heard will now be early 2011.

Here Comes Piranha 3-Double D

There's only 1 awards show on TV I watch and that's Spike TV's Scream Awards. Lots of horror and fantasy and all the good stuff plus it's wild and over-the-top, not all stuffy and pompous. In other words, it's fun.

Last night they debuted several new trailers and the most memorable one for my money would have to be this one for Piranha 3DD. Oh it's only about 30 seconds long... but what a glorious 30 seconds it is. Do you like piranhas? Blood? The Hoff? Gary Busey? Double-Ds in slow mo? Then perhaps you should feast your eyes on 2012's Citizen Kane!



Yes they're somehow invading a water park and yes Ving Rhames got munched in the first Piranha, but it appears as though he actually only lost his legs. And didn't it look like they were replaced with shotguns? Who hasn't wanted shotgun legs I ask you?!?!

Oh my, this movie is going to be AWESOME. Sometime in 2012... haven't seen an official release date.

Bag of Bones Trailer

It's been about a decade since I read Stephen King's "Bag of Bones" novel and frankly I don't remember a whole lot about it except that I enjoyed it and it was sort of spooky. In December, there's a four-hour A&E miniseries starring Pierce Brosnan and Melissa George that looks like it'll be pretty cool that's based on it. I think it was originally going to be a movie but they decided to make it a bit longer and the mini-series will be 4 1-hour episodes... so I've heard. Anyway, Mick Garris (“Sleepwalkers,” “The Stand,” “Desperation” and the Steven Weber version of “The Shining” (which I really like)) directed from a teleplay by Matt Venne ("Fear Itself").

The story centers on a rich novelist who seems to be getting advice from his late wife as he helps a young widow in a custody battle with her son’s wealthy grandfather.

John 5 Settles the Score for The Lords of Salem:

If there's one thing you can always count on in a Rob Zombie flick, it's that it will probably have a killer soundtrack. Today the rocker/filmmaker announced who'd be providing the tunes for his new flick, The Lords of Salem, via his Facebook page.

Zombie's current guitarist John 5 will be composing the score for The Lords of Salem, which begins lensing in just two weeks.

The flick stars Richard Lynch as the film's protagonist, "Reverend John Hawthorne"; Billy Drago as "Judge Samuel Mather," a key player in the history of the Lords; Dee Wallace as "Sonny," a self-help guru; Bruce Dern as Francis Matthias, author of the book "Satan's Last Stand - The Truth About The Salem Witch Trials"; Torsten Voges as Count Gorgann, lead singer of the Norwegian death metal band Leviathan the Fleeing Serpent; Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman "Whitey" Salvador, one third of "The Big H Team" at WIQZ - Salem's Rock Radio; Meg Foster as Margaret Morgan, the leader of a secret coven of witches in Salem; Ernest Thomas, who will play Chip "Freakshow" McDonald, the station manager at Salem's #1 rock station; and Sheri Moon Zombie.

Synopsis

Heidi, a blonde rock chick, DJs at a local radio station and, together with the two Hermans (Whitey and Munster), forms part of the "Big H Radio Team".

A mysterious wooden box containing a vinyl record arrives for Heidi, "a gift from the Lords". She assumes it's a rock band on a mission to spread their word. As Heidi and Whitey play the Lords' record, it starts to play backwards, and Heidi experiences a flashback to a past trauma.

Later Whitey plays the Lords' record, dubbing them the Lords of Salem, and to his surprise, the record plays normally and is a massive hit with listeners.

The arrival of another wooden box from the Lords presents the Big H Team with free tickets, posters and records to host a gig in Salem. Soon Heidi and her cohorts find that the gig is far from the rock spectacle they're expecting: The original Lords of Salem are returning, and they're out for BLOOD.

American Horror Story in 1 Day

Dexter came roaring back on Showtime Sunday night and The Walking Dead debuts on AMC in a couple of weeks (Oct 16th actually) but finally there's some new horror for television tomorrow night as American Horror Story premieres Wed. Oct. 5 at 10PM ET/PT on FX. I've watched a lot of stuff and am still trying to figure out what the hell is going on with little luck. This should be fun. Check out this latest sneak peek:

Scream 4 On DVD Tuesday

Way back in April I did one of my guides to the Scream trilogy, as it were at the time. Click right here if you want to check out "This Idiot's Guide To The Scream Movies" and then come back here. I'll wait. Go ahead.

Back? Ok, well this year Scream 4 hit theaters (April 15h) and I never made it out to catch it for one reason or another but it hits DVD this week so I'll try to get my idiot's guide updated, just for you fine readers.

It didn't actually bomb but it definitely did way less that the first 3 films in the series. The US gross was just $38 mil (it costs about $40 mil) and added to the foreign gross of $59 mil gives it just less than $100 mil worldwide. 2 of the other 3 films did that in the US alone and the 3rd one got close. I don't know if we'll see another in the franchise or not.

But anyway, I like the franchise and will be picking up the new one. Here's the trailer and look for the DVD Tuesday:

A Note From the Author

In January 1968, I rented a cabin in Lake Tahoe to start writing a novel about demonic possession that I’d been thinking about for many years. I‘d been driven to it, actually: I was a writer of comic novels and farcical screenplays such as A Shot in the Dark with almost all of my income derived from films; but because the season for “funny” had abruptly turned dry and no studio would hire me for anything non-comedic, I had reached James Thurber’s stage of desperation when, as he wrote in a "Preface to His Life," comedy writers sometimes take to “calling their home from their office, or their office from their home, asking for themselves, and then hanging up in hard-breathing relief upon being told they “weren’t in.’” My breaking point came, I suppose, when at the Van Nuys, California, unemployment office I spotted my movie agent in a line three down from mine. And so the cabin in Tahoe where I was destined to become the caretaker in Stephen King’s terrifying The Shining, typing my version of “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” hour after hour, day after day, for over six weeks as I kept changing the date in my opening paragraph from “April 1” to April something else, because each time I would read the page aloud, the rhythm of the lines seemed to change, a maddening cycle of emptiness and insecurity –- magnified, I suppose, by the fact that I had no clear plot for the novel in mind -- that continued until I at last gave up the cabin and hoped for better luck back “home,” a clapboard raccoon-surrounded guest house in the hills of Encino owned by a former Hungarian opera star who had purchased the property from the luminous film actress, Angela Lansbury, and where I finally overcame the block by realizing that I was starting the novel in the wrong place, namely the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C., as opposed to northern Iraq. Almost a year later I completed a first draft of the novel. At the request of my editors at Harper and Row, I did make two quick changes: cleaning up Chris MacNeil’s potty mouth, and making the ending “less obvious.” But because of a dire financial circumstance, I had not another day to devote to the manuscript, so that when I received a life-saving offer to adapt Calder Willingham’s novel Providence Island for the screen for Paul Newman’s film company, I instantly accepted and left my novel to find its fate. For most of these past forty years I have rued not having done a thorough second draft and careful polish of the dialogue and prose. But now, like an answer to a prayer, this fortieth anniversary of the novel has given me not only the opportunity to do another draft, but to do it at a time in my life—I will be 84 this coming January—when it might not be totally unreasonable to hope that my abilities, such as they are, have at least somewhat improved, and for all of this I say, Deo gratias!

American Horror Story Looks Very Cool

It like we went a long time without any good horror stuff on TV, then along came great shows like Masters of Horror, Dexter, The Walking Dead and Supernatural plus lots of other fun stuff... from Kingdom Hospital to True Blood. Now I'm seeing a whole lot of really interesting tidbits from FX's upcoming "American Horror Story", and I really like the looks of it. It seems like it's going to be high quality and pretty creepy. Check out this new poster at the right and a little 30 second promo trailer at the end of this post. Here's their Facebook page as well with lots of goodies posted regularly.



The show revolves around The Harmons, a family of three who move from Boston to Los Angeles as a means to reconcile past anguish.



The fantastic cast features Dylan McDermott (The Practice) as “Ben Harmon,” a psychiatrist; Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights) as Ben’s wife; Taissa Farmiga as the Harmons’ teenage daughter; Jessica Lange (Tootsie, Cape Fear, Big Fish) in her first-ever regular series TV role as the Harmons’ neighbor; Evan Peters (One Tree Hill) plays one of Ben’s patients; and Denis O’Hare (The Good Wife) as “Larry Harvey.”



"American Horror Story" is set to premiere in time for Halloween on October 5th on FX and will run Wednesdays at 10 PM ET/PT.

Here's the latest trailer for Chromeskull: Laid To Rest 2 and it's got Brian Austin Green, who I remember well as Derek Reese on the Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles TV show, but many will forever remember as David Silver on Beverly Hills 90210. It also stars Danielle Harris from Hatchet II and both of Rob Zombie's Halloween films. Nick Principe is back as the Chrome Dome himself. The film is due Sept 20th I believe.

The Steven Quale-directed Final Destination 5 brings together an ensemble cast that includes Emma Bell and Nick D’Agosto, along with Miles Fisher (TV’s 'Mad Men' and 'Gossip Girl'), Arlen Escarpeta (Friday the 13th), Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (TV’s 'The Bold and the Beautiful'), P.J. Video Preview Now Available of Alan Robert's Horror Comic Crawl to Me: "

Alan Robert, best known for being the bassist and creative force behind the respected hard rock group Life of Agony, has launched a short video teaser featuring images from his new, original horror comic book series Crawl to Me. Read on for the details.

IDW Publishing will release Crawl to Me beginning monthly on July 13, 2011. Crawl to Me is created, written and illustrated by Robert and boasts three unique covers per issue. Synopsis:
